Tesla Expands Supercharger Network in Latin America

Tesla announced the largest Supercharger network expansion in Latin America since the brand's arrival in the region. The plan foresees the installation of 850 new charging points by the end of 2027, distributed across Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina, with priority focus on long-distance routes that currently have coverage gaps between capitals and medium-sized cities.

Brazil Receives the Largest Share of Investment

Brazil concentrates 40% of the planned new points, with expansion on the Fernão Dias, Presidente Dutra, Bandeirantes, and Anhanguera highways — the busiest in the country. Tesla entered into agreements with fuel station chains and shopping centers for the installation of stations with 8 to 16 chargers, with power of up to 250 kW, compatible with the CCS2 standard in addition to Tesla's own connector, expanding access to vehicles from other brands.

The compatibility strategy is a relevant shift: until 2024, Superchargers were exclusive to Tesla vehicles. Opening to other brands follows the model already adopted in Europe and the US, transforming the network into an infrastructure service independent of vehicle sales — and creating a new revenue stream for the company.

Challenges and Expectations

The expansion faces considerable logistical challenges, especially in Brazil, where electrical licensing bureaucracy and differences in distribution grid quality vary greatly between states. Energy sector specialists estimate that Tesla will need to negotiate direct supply contracts with distributors in at least five states to guarantee the reliability of higher-power stations. Despite the difficulties, the announcement is interpreted by the market as a signal of confidence in the growth of electric vehicle adoption in the region over the next five years.
