Figma Adds AI-Powered Real-Time Collaboration

Figma announced a significant update to its design platform with the introduction of Figma AI Collaborate, a set of tools that integrates AI-based asset generation and editing directly into the real-time collaboration flow. The feature arrives after months of closed beta with more than 3,000 design teams and marks a relevant step in redefining the role of AI in professional prototyping tools.

What the New Tools Enable

The most impactful feature is Asset Generation in Context: by selecting a frame or component, the designer can describe in natural language what they need, and the system generates visual variations coherent with the design system already existing in the file — respecting typography, color palette, and border styles already defined. It's not generic image generation; it's contextualized generation within the project's constraints.

Another highlight is the AI Prototype Suggester, which analyzes the existing navigation flow and suggests prototyping connections the designer may not have mapped, identifying orphan screens, flows without a return path, and error cases without visual handling. The tool works as an automatic flow reviewer, reducing prototype QA time before handoff to development.

Positioning and Privacy

Figma was careful to communicate that clients' design assets are not used to train public models without explicit consent. Companies on the Enterprise plan have the option to fully opt into local processing, without sending data to external servers, using embedded models available in the desktop version. The update is available for all plans starting today, with some advanced features restricted to the Professional plan and above.
