Discord Launches Tools for Developer Communities
Discord announced a set of new tools exclusively aimed at developer communities, consolidating a movement the platform began two years ago to position itself as communication infrastructure for the software development ecosystem. The new features include expanded APIs, new channel types, and a certification program for high-quality technical servers.
Expanded APIs and New Channels
The main new feature for developers is the Developer Gateway API v3, which significantly expands what bots and integrations can do in servers. The new endpoints allow programmatic creation and management of threads, automated moderation with semantic context (not just keyword-based), and native integration with webhooks from platforms like GitHub, GitLab, Jira, and Linear — without the need for intermediary services like Zapier.
A new channel type called Code Forum was introduced specifically for technical discussions: it supports code blocks with syntax highlighting for over 80 languages, two-level nested threading, marking answers as accepted solutions, and integration with Gist and Pastebin for long snippets. The structure is inspired by the Stack Overflow forum model, but within Discord's real-time environment.
Certification Program and Moderation
The Discord Verified Developer Community is a certification program that evaluates technical servers for content quality, moderation practices, and community engagement. Certified servers receive an official badge, early access to new API features, and priority in the public community directory. The stated goal is to create a reference ecosystem for developers seeking quality technical communities, differentiating from the noise of generic servers.
